The Stud said good bye to its space at the corner of 9th and Harrison at the end of May 2020. They were slated to move out of the space at some point in the future, but the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated that process. With venues being closed down, it just didn’t make sense not keep paying for a space that they weren’t going to using for that much longer anyway. Better to focus on the future than to try to hold onto the past.

These photos were shot during the last few days of their lease while the staff moved everything out. About 3 days after these photos were taken, the landlord painted over all the murals.

These images are part of a series of body painting and image projection work. We start by painting the head of Phatima Rude silver and then projecting images on her. The subjects of the projected images are varied and chosen for different reasons. Some are anatomy or images of other people; some are chosen for their visual / formal aspects; others are just random. All are chosen with an eye towards transforming Phatima, so she can merge with, or inhabit, the image.

I used the same projection and body painting technique in my Ode to Giger.

One of the ideas that drives my work with projected images is the transformation of the underlying surface or model – how is that surface or model affected by what we project onto it? Phatima is as close to the personification of pure transformation as I have ever met. She is always in the liminal space of gender, being neither one or another, and always able to freely flow from one end of that spectrum to the other. Her ability to change and morph is legendary and is a perfect canvas to work with in this series.

This collection of work evolved out of an experiment I wanted to do. I saw a video of projection mapping techniques onto human faces and wanted to try it out for myself. I enlisted a few different models, selected some images, set up my projector and started shooting.

I painted the models silver to increase the reflective quality of their skin and to give an extra layer of texture to it as well. The images projected on them were a mixture of porn, nature, and abstracted spacescapes. The captured images were then manipulated further in PhotoShop. What started to appear, as I worked with my source materials, were creatures who definitely reminded me of the biomechanical style of H.R. Giger, who has been a big influence on me since the original Alien movie came out. So, it just seemed appropriate to give pay homage.

I always find inspiration for my work in the surroundings I inhabit. This is an on going series of images that I’ve captured and manipulated of various cities, though it is primarily of San Francisco, where I live.

Visions from the Garden was shot at Camp and Sons during the first couple of decades of the 21st century.

There are places in the world that draw people for various reasons like the healing properties of the water, the freshness of the air, or the inspiration that is found. These are the visions inspired by Camp and Sons.

Shot digitally and manipulated, all images are printed on metal and were exhibited at Mercury Café October 2016 – January 2017.
